Marcus Bignot insists his group of players remain upbeat heading into the final stretch of fixtures in the 2020/21 Barclays FA Women’s Super League season.

Aston Villa Women fell to a 2-0 defeat at the hands of league leaders and reigning champions, Chelsea, on Sunday.

Sam Kerr struck either side of half-time to put away a dogged and resilient Villa side, and the overall performance was cause for optimism according to Bignot.

“Obviously disappointed in the manner (of the goals conceded)” said the interim manager.

“I’ve got to say - what a positive performance that was.

“We asked the group to make sure we came out of this game with belief.

“We certainly got that. We asked certain players to show different leadership skills, which you need against Chelsea. We got that as well.

“Overall, in terms of getting a group going in the right direction, there were good signs.”

Bignot acknowledged the difficult run of fixtures Villa have faced since his appointment towards the end of January, and is of the belief that the next group of games is the defining stretch:

“I thought we were competing for the Champions League because all we seem to be doing is playing against the top four!” joked Bignot.

“There’s a nice build-up going into this next group of games.

“We’ll take a lot of confidence from this game and into the Everton fixture.”
