Matty Cash wore a big smile on his face as he looked ahead to his second season as an Aston Villa player.

The 23-year-old expressed his delight to be back at Bodymoor Heath as the squad prepare for the 2021/22 campaign.

Cash impressed during 28 Premier League appearances in his debut season at the club last term, and he’s aiming to continue improving after reflecting on Villa’s 11th-placed finish.

He said: “The first few days were tough, which is to be expected in pre-season, but it’s brilliant to be back around here and putting in the work with the lads for the season ahead.

“I loved every minute of my first season. I went through some tough spells and some good spells, but you’ve got to go through some tough games.

“Altogether, it was brilliant. I learnt a lot in different situations, so hopefully I can take that experience into this season and really kick on.”

After missing the final three league games through injury last season, Cash has yet to play in front of fans as a Villa player.

With supporters returning this term, the full-back is excited to finally have a chance to play in front of the Villa faithful.

He said: “I played at Villa Park for Nottingham Forest and it’s not the same. That was in the Championship as well.

“The fans at Villa – from what I’ve seen online – are unbelievable. I can’t wait to try and build a connection with them, give my all for them and hopefully they can start singing my name.”
