Dean Smith couldn’t believe Aston Villa failed to walk away from Turf Moor with anything to show for their efforts on Wednesday night.

The visiting Villans led twice and created a number of great chances but ended up on the losing side after Burnley produced a second half fight back.

Head coach Smith praised some aspects of his side’s performance but was less than satisfied with other elements.

He said: “My reaction is one of disbelief. It’s a game that should have been won at half-time with the chances we created and the football we played.

“Saying that, we didn’t start the game well for the first ten minutes, but after that we took over it and our quality shone through with a good goal.

“Their keeper’s been making saves and it was a game that should have been won at half-time.

“They haven’t worked us to get goals, they were just given them. It’s very difficult to win in this league and we’ve just thrown three points away.”

Burnley had been notoriously goal shy, netting just ten goals in 18 Premier League games before Wednesday night’s clash.

But they found their feet in front of goal during the second half, and Smith felt his side had helped them on their way.

He said: “The attacking play was what I expect from us with the quality of players we have. What I don’t expect is the defending for their goals.

“We’ve been good this season – we can’t get away from that, but we can’t come here and concede three goals like we did tonight.”
