Matty Cash believes Aston Villa can take a lot of positives from their spirited showing at Old Trafford on New Year’s Day.

A narrow loss was confirmed only after the visiting Villans had pushed Manchester United all the way in the closing stages, with Cash going close to an equaliser himself.

The defender felt his side deserved more from the game after more than matching their opponents for long spells.

Cash said: “We had our chances, so I think a draw would have been a fair result. We pushed all the way to the end and that’s what we’ve been doing all season.

“We fought all the way and we were unlucky in the end. They’re a great side, hard to break down and really good on the counter-attack.

“All season we’ve played some really good stuff and picked up some good results away from home.

“We came here and we only lost by one goal having played some really good stuff. We went in at half-time and I thought the game was in their hands.

“We got together and said that we would fight to the end. There are a lot of positives to take.”

Villa’s five-match unbeaten run came to an end in Manchester, but the performance once again showed the quality of the current squad.

And Cash is keen to move on quickly as Villa look forward to the rest of the season, with an FA Cup tie against Liverpool up next.

“There are loads of games to come and plenty of time to bounce back,” he said.

“We’ve played really well this season and we can take lots of positives going forward.”
