Rewind the clock 40 years and Aston Villa were currently in the midst of a seven-match winning sequence and 10-game unbeaten run which put the club firmly on course for the 1980/81 First Division title.

A 2-0 victory over Liverpool on 10 January, 1981 was followed by a further six successive league wins until early March, with Ron Saunders’ side going unbeaten for three months over the winter period.

It followed a similar run between September-November and propelled Villa to a seventh, and most recent, top-flight championship.

40th anniversary 1980/81

Our celebrations continue and ramp up as the 40th anniversary prepares to reach its climax in May, with Tony Morley joining VillaTV for a sit-down interview to discuss the unbeaten run, the influence of Saunders and much more. You can watch below!

Club legend Morley was one of seven ever-presents who started all 42 league matches, contributing 10 goals along the way, with boss Saunders using just 14 players over the course of the memorable campaign.

Stay tuned for more anniversary celebrations with special features, match highlights and interviews on the website, VillaTV and across our social media channels.
