After excelling for England at Euro 2020, Tyrone Mings has returned to Aston Villa determined to help the club push on in the upcoming season.

The centre-back was widely praised for his displays against Croatia and Scotland in his first major tournament as the Three Lions made it to the final.

And Mings reflected fondly on the experience after returning to training this week.

He said: “I loved every minute of it. To go to a tournament with England is surreal, and to be able to play the first game was a huge occasion.

“We didn’t have as many fans in as we had towards the end of the tournament, but it felt like a proper game again.

“To be part of it and to play in it was just amazing. I was so happy with my performances.”

Mings’ international exploits came on the back of a standout campaign at club level, with the 28-year-old forming part of a defence that equalled a club record 15 Premier League clean sheets.

The stingy backline played a big part as Villa finished 11th in the table, and Mings now has his sights set on bettering that position this term.

He said: “This season, we’re looking to improve again. It will be difficult to improve on last season’s league table, but the owners are very ambitious, the manager’s very ambitious and we as a squad are very ambitious.

“We’re continually investing in the infrastructure of the club, in the first team and it feels like everything is going in the right direction.

“Everything is geared up to us improving year on year, so hopefully that happens again. I’m sure it will.”
