Aston Villa Women return home for the first time in over a month on Saturday, as they prepare for the visit of Bristol City in the Women's Super League.

Villa's last four outings have come on the road, with Marcus Bignot's side losing three and drawing one in that span.

That lone draw came on Tuesday, as a resolute and disciplined display stifled West Ham United in a tense stalemate at the bottom of the division.

Now, Villa are faced with the challenge of following that result up against another fellow struggler in Bristol City.

Saturday’s opponents are a familiar foe.

Bristol City come to the Banks’s Stadium having already faced off against us two times across all competitions this campaign.

We visited Twerton Park in December and put in an outstanding display against the Robins, winning the league fixture 4-0. Doubles from Ramona Petzelberger and Shania Hayles sealed the win in Bath.

We then made a return a month later in the quarter-final of the Conti Cup. This time, we would come unstuck as a brace from former Villa striker Ebony Salmon sealed Bristol’s place in the last four.

Salmon herself has been on fire throughout the 2020/21 campaign, netting 10 goals in all competitions for City. The 20-year-old’s form was rewarded with a Lionesses call-up in February, where she made her full international debut in their 6-0 victory over Northern Ireland.

As for the magnitude of this upcoming fixture, the stakes couldn’t be higher. Our point at West Ham on Tuesday lifted us off the foot of the Barclays FA Women’s Super League table with four games to go, leapfrogging City in the process.

Marcus Bignot

Villa's interim manager spoke to VillaTV following Tuesday night's draw with West Ham...

“A pleasing performance and a positive result that takes us off the bottom of the table.

A good night when you consider what we were coming in with in terms of availability.

Massive credit to the players because of the circumstances.

Nat Haigh – to come in at late notice and perform the way she did was superb.

For Amy West to have had her position changed at late notice and put in that type of performance for 90 minutes… credit to her.

Livvy (McLoughlin) – still at school, but she knows what we think of her.

We’re putting her in these situations and she’s excelling.

The Academy can be very pleased that we’re putting faith in these players.

You’ve seen the togetherness. We’ve shown tonight we’re going in the right direction.”

Amy West

Villa midfielder Amy West also offered her thoughts on Tuesday's stalemate, as well as a look ahead to Saturday...

“A really good point on the road for us.

We knew it would be a really tough fixture going into it, and we understood the pressures that came with it.

We’re really happy to come out of it with a point.

The goal going into the fixture was to make sure we didn’t lose, and we did that.

Every player worked really hard and gave everything they had to make sure we’re fighting for our place in this league.”

On starting in the Barclays FA Women's Super League for the very first time...

“I’m really happy to get my first WSL start.

I wanted to make sure I brought fight and passion into my performance.

I wanted to win balls in the middle of the park and set us off on attacks.

I thought we were resilient and that showed.”

On Saturday and beyond...

“It was really important we got the point to take us off the foot of the table going into the weekend.

We’re well prepared for it. We know the pressure that comes along with it, but we’re more than ready for the challenge.

I know we’re going to give 110%, it’s going to be exciting.”
