At a Glance

Aston Villa Women open their Conti Cup campaign on Wednesday, a competition in which they reached the quarter-final stage in 2019-20.

Gemma Davies' side take on Sheffield United at the Banks's Stadium, aiming to kickstart their season after experience a tough start to life in the Barclays FA Women's Super League.

It will be the first time Villa have taken on the Blades since both sides competed for last season's FA Women's Championship title.

For Villa, it will certainly be a competition in which a chance of silverware is the motivating factor for Davies and co.

Sheffield United

Sheffield United, meanwhile, have made another strong start to their Championship campaign.

Spearheaded by two former Villans in Mel Johnson and Katie Wilkinson, the Blades are again fighting at the top of the table in the hopes of gaining promotion to the WSL.

Gemma Davies

The Boss

“We know, collectively, we weren’t good enough (against Reading)"

“We weren’t at it.

“It’s disappointing, it’s frustrating.

“We know, collectively, we need to be better.

“That very much was the message at the end of the game.”

“Credit needs to be given to Everton.

“They’re a fantastic side.

“They’ve been building something really special over the last season or so.

“They challenged us, they tested us, and we didn’t match that".

“As a group, we have to adapt to the situation in front of us.

“We can’t plan and prepare for every eventuality and every scenario.

“A lot of the work we do leading up to fixtures is principle-based, which helps us deal with whatever scenario is put in front of us.

“We have to adapt on the day.”

“We were flat as soon as soon they scored the first goal”

“Our heads went down, and we lost confidence.

“We’re going to need to work on that for the next game, so we’re going to focus on that.”

“We did say that we were coming to come out (of half-time) and be better because it wasn’t good enough from anyone.

“We need to work harder and improve in training.”

“We knew how ruthless this league could be from the start of the season.

“We’ve played against some really good teams.

“Everton were extremely good and their finishing was too.

“We need to stop the opposition getting shots off and we need to be better defensively as well.”
