Douglas Luiz has spoken of his pride at representing Brazil on the international stage.

The Aston Villa midfielder impressed during October’s international break as he made his first two starts for Brazil.

Luiz helped the Seleção secure victories over Bolivia and Peru in their bid for 2022 FIFA World Cup qualification.

He is currently back with Brazil as the five-time World Cup winners face Venezuela in Sao Paulo on Saturday before a trip to Uruguay next Tuesday.

Speaking to VillaTV before he jetted off to South America, Luiz described his honour at pulling on the famous yellow and green jersey of his nation.

“I’m very proud to be representing my country,” he said.

“It’s the dream of every Brazilian kid, it’s the same here in England.

“Everyone wants to represent their country.

“My dream came true because I worked hard.

“I thank God that I was able to achieve my objective.

“My new objective is to keep myself there.

“So, I’m giving my all here at the club. I want to win games, I want to fight to win titles. That’s what I’ll be doing.”

The 22-year-old, born in Rio de Janeiro, made his international debut against South Korea in November last year.

Luiz has been a standout performer in Villa’s midfield since his arrival at the club, racking up his 50th appearance in Sunday’s emphatic 3-0 triumph at Arsenal.

Asked how he has adapted to international football, Luiz said: “I consider myself to be a skilful and intelligent player.

“I think I can say that it allows me to play in any position in midfield.

“Of course, here at the club, you spend a whole season in a different role.

“But you’re among the best with the national team, so you have to adapt to the formation that the gaffer wants.

“I think I did my job well, that’s why I’ve been invited back.”

Good luck against Venezuela and Uruguay, Douglas!
