Aston Villa Women return to Conti Cup action, five weeks after their opening night victory over Sheffield United.

The team seem to have used the sudden hiatus to their advantage, and returned to action on Sunday with an outstanding 2-0 win at Brighton & Hove Albion in the league.

Gemma Davies & co. will come into this fixture with a huge boost of confidence, and now appear poised to make it two wins out of two in this season's league cup.

Coventry United, familiar opponents from the 2019-20 season, currently sit 9th in the FA Women's Championship and are looking to get themselves on the board in this competition following a 5-2 defeat at the hands of Durham on opening night.

Nat Haigh

The Boss

Gemma Davies spoke to VillaTV following Sunday's big win against the Seagulls...

“It’s a good feeling. It’s been a real collective effort over the last five weeks. These 90 minutes have epitomised all the work that the group has put in.

“We had to ride some early pressure. Brighton came out the blocks quickly. We rode the pressure and then grew into the game. As we started building confidence and momentum, we worked the ball better. We had two very good chances in the first half. I felt going into half-time, the momentum was on our side. We took the lead and it steadied some nerves.

“We mixed things up going into this game. Jodie (Hutton) and Shania (Hayles) have been working particularly hard in training, and both had very good games against Sheffield. They’ve earned their place in the team."

Anita Asante

Anita Asante, after scoring her first goal in claret & blue, also spoke to VillaTV...

“Unbelievable” said Asante elatedly.

“It was an amazing team effort.

“Everyone bought into the game-plan and executed it.

“We deserved the result today.”

“It was crucial for us to stay in the game” implored Asante.

“We made sure, for 45 minutes, we were difficult to penetrate.

“We wanted to keep it goalless going into half-time so we could carry momentum into the second half.”

“It’s right up there because I’m not known for scoring goals” said a beaming Asante of her stunning left-footed finish.

“I’m absolutely delighted.

“Maybe it’s a testament to all the left-foot work I’ve been doing.”
