Several Aston Villa players were in action for their countries on Wednesday and Thursday night.

And there were mixed fortunes as some were left celebrating while others fell to defeat.

Here’s a round-up of how they got on…

John McGinn

John McGinn

McGinn and Scotland stood on the brink of qualifying for their first major tournament since 1998, taking on Serbia for a place at the European Championships.

And after a goalless first half, Ryan Christie looked to have sent the Scots through to next summer’s showpiece event.

McGinn played 82 minutes before being replaced, and he could only watch on as Serbia equalised with one minute of normal time remaining.

But Scotland weren’t to be denied and they went onto win 5-4 on penalties after a goalless extra-time.

Conor Hourihane, Jack Grealish and Tyrone Mings

Jack Grealish

Three Villans were involved at Wembley as England took on the Republic of Ireland in a friendly.

Grealish and Mings started for England against their club mate, who took up a position in centre midfield for his country.

The English duo left the pitch after an hour after helping their country take a 3-0 lead, with Grealish registering an assist, while Hourihane exited ten minutes later.

Marvelous Nakamba

Burton Albion away in the Carabao Cup

Nakamba started for Zimbabwe as they faced Algeria in Africa Cup of Nations qualifying.

They trailed 2-0 at half-time and ended up losing the match 3-1.

Nakamba and his teammates now head to Zimbabwe for the return fixture on Monday.

Bertrand Traore

Bertrand Traore v Southampton

Burkina Faso overcame Malawi in Africa Cup of Nations qualifying.

Traore’s namesake Lassina scored twice as they secured a 3-1 victory.

The team’s play again in Malawi on Monday.

Emiliano Martinez

Emi Martinez Argentina

Martinez was an unused substitute as Argentina maintained their unbeaten start to World Cup qualifying.

Angel Romero put Paraguay 1-0 up from the penalty spot, but Argentina fought back through Nicolas Gonzalez to take a point.

Argentina now travel to Peru for their second fixture of the international break on Wednesday.

Lovre Kalinic

Lovre Kalinic Croatia

Goalkeeper Kalinic was an unused substitute as Croatia drew 3-3 with Turkey in a friendly.

He’ll hope to feature in his country’s Nations League games against Sweden and Portugal on Saturday and Tuesday respectively.
