Douglas Luiz admits that he is not satisfied with Aston Villa’s last two results, but he still believes that the team have set themselves up for a successful Premier League campaign.

Dean Smith’s side started the league season with four successive wins, an achievement that no Villa team had managed since 1930.

Home defeats to Leeds United and Southampton followed, but the opening sequence of results has given the Brazilian enough confidence that the club will reach their targets for 2020/21.

Speaking to VillaTV, he said: “I’m very happy at the moment, the team are in a good place.

“The last two games didn’t go as expected because we want to get points at home, but we can’t let ourselves get off track and think that it’s all going wrong.

“We have four wins out of six, we are doing well.”

Douglas Luiz v Southampton

Villa boss Smith hailed Douglas Luiz’s performances following the 2019/20 restart in June, as the club got the results to steer clear of relegation on the final day of the campaign.

His good form has continued, and he is happy to take the responsibility of being a key player for the team.

“He [Dean Smith] considers me to be an important player in the squad, I know what I’m capable of and I know what I can do to help,” he explained.

“I think we have what it takes to have a great season.

“I’ll be there to support my teammates, train hard and give my all in games.”
