Aston Villa Women were beaten by Birmingham City Women in the Second City derby on Saturday.

Claudia Walker fired in the only goal of the game at Villa Park, as Gemma Davies' side suffered defeat for the first time in almost two months.

Villa controlled large parts of the game, but lacked the edge in the final third.

Davies made just one change from last weekend's 2-0 league win over Brighton & Hove Albion.

Captain Marisa Ewers came back in to anchor the midfield behind Chloë Arthur and Ramona Petzelberger, while Anita Asante dropped back into defence in place of Nat Haigh.

The opening 45 minutes was expectedly cagey considering the occasion and magnitude of the game.

The visitors had a couple of speculative efforts comfortably saved by Lisa Weiß , while Villa had several efforts narrowly miss the target.

The hosts' best opportunities for large parts of the first half came down the left-hand side, with Jodie Hutton's energy and endeavour making a noticeable impact on the flank.

On one occasion, the forward battled down the left wing before clipping a ball into the middle, which Ewers couldn't quite direct towards goal with a headed attempt.

Nadine Hanssen came on just shy of the 70-minute mark as Villa searched for a breakthrough, and she very nearly picked up where she left off against Coventry in midweek.

The midfielder pounced on a loose ball inside the area and rifled a low shot towards the bottom corner. The 'keeper was beaten, but a Blues defender was on-hand to stab clear just in time.

Just as Villa were picking up a head of steam, Blues dealt them a sucker punch.

Walker, widely regarded as the biggest threat to Villa's backline heading into the game, blasted a shot past Weiß that went in off the underside of the bar to give the visitors the lead with little time remaining.

Villa return to action on Thursday in the FA Women's Continental League Cup, when they travel to Durham in a winner-takes-all Group Stage tie.
