Anita Asante hailed Aston Villa’s ‘team effort’ on Sunday, as they picked up their first points of the Barclays FA Women’s Super League season against Brighton & Hove Albion.

Second-half goals from Asante and fellow summer signing, Ramona Petzelberger, put the finishing touches to an impressive collective display against the Seagulls.

The 2-0 success was greeted by scenes of jubilation on the final whistle, and Asante spoke to VillaTV about how good it felt to get on the board.

“Unbelievable” said Asante elatedly.

“It was an amazing team effort.

“Everyone bought into the game-plan and executed it.

“We deserved the result today.”

Villa didn’t have it all their own way on Sunday.

Brighton had several periods of sustained pressure, particularly at 0-0, but Gemma Davies’ side held firm and reaped the rewards.

“It was crucial for us to stay in the game” implored Asante.

“We made sure, for 45 minutes, we were difficult to penetrate.

“We wanted to keep it goalless going into half-time so we could carry momentum into the second half.”

For a while it looked as if it wasn’t going to be Villa’s day.

Either side of the break, Stine Larsen struck the woodwork with a pair of fantastic efforts.

However, just shy of the hour-mark, Asante produced a finish Larsen would’ve been proud of to put the Villans ahead.

“It’s right up there because I’m not known for scoring goals” said a beaming Asante of her stunning left-footed finish.

“I’m absolutely delighted.

“Maybe it’s a testament to all the left-foot work I’ve been doing.”

Villa continue their campaign on Tuesday night, when they travel to Coventry United in the FA Women’s Continental League Cup.
