Aston Villa Women lost 3-1 to Tottenham Hotspur Women at The Hive on Sunday.

Nadine Hanssen scored either side of an Alex Morgan penalty and a Caro Siems own goal, before Rosella Ayane wrapped up the victory as Villa were brought back down to earth.

Sunday's results bring Villa back down the table to 11th, but they remain four points clear of bottom-placed Bristol City.

Ramona Petzelberger

Gemma Davies named an unchanged starting XI from Wednesday night's win over City.

It showed in the opening exchanges, with Ramona Petzelberger and Hanssen both attempting their luck from distance in a confident start.

However, it would be the home side who would draw first blood, perhaps against the run of play.

Morgan was deemed to have been fouled inside the area by Lisa Weiß, and the American picked herself up to tuck away the resulting spot-kick and put Spurs 1-0 up.

Villa weren't behind for long, though.

Hanssen, in buoyant mood following a good performance in midweek, picked up the ball 25 yards out and lobbed the Spurs 'keeper without hesitation to draw us back level.

But Spurs would quickly regain the lead before the break.

Morgan, again at the heart of the Spurs attack, played in a dangerous ball from the left which was inadvertently bundled in by Siems.

Villa couldn't manage to find a route back into the game once the second half began, and Spurs doubled their lead with just under half an hour to go.

Ayane, loitered at the back post as a cross came in from the right, and she was on hand to sweep home past Weiss.

Diana Silva and Jodie Hutton came on as a final roll of the dice for Davies, but it was in vain and attention now turns to a pivotal game against West Ham United next weekend.
