Dean Smith was delighted to be leaving Molineux with all three points after Aston Villa struck late to down Wolves on Saturday afternoon.

Anwar El Ghazi delivered the knockout blow right at the end of a feisty game that could have gone either way.

The Villa head coach, taking charge of his 500th game as a manager, praised the fight and effort shown by his team, particularly when they were reduced to ten men after Douglas Luiz was sent off.

He said: “Ultimately a happy ending for us. I’m really pleased that we went and won a penalty at the death when we were down to ten men. It was coolly taken by Anwar El Ghazi too.

“It was a real battling performance. We started the game really well and took it to them. The only disappointment is we didn’t create big chances or work their goalkeeper enough.

“All in all, a really tight game. We were indebted to some good defensive performances as well.”

The victory moves Villa onto 18 points from their first ten Premier League games, and sees the club move back into the top half of the table.

After the struggles of last season, Smith is pleased with how things are going so far this term.

He said: “I’m pleased with the start that we’ve had. I thought this was a tight game today and if we’d have left with a point, I’d have been happy as well.

“I look at the ten games that we’ve played and only Leeds have deserved to beat us. If you play ten games, and you haven’t deserved to get beat in nine of them then I think you’re onto something.

“We now need to get ready for Burnley."
