Gemma Davies was in defiant mood following Aston Villa's 2-0 defeat to Manchester United on Saturday.

Goals from Leah Galton and Ella Toone proved to be the difference in the Barclays FA Women's Super League encounter, but Villa more than held their own against the table-toppers.

But the hosts, who remain outside the relegation zone, created several chances which on another day would've ended up in the back of the net.

Davies was quick to point out how evenly-fought the game was for the vast majority:

“There’s a lot of positivity" she claimed.

"If you looked on paper before the game started, United were the favourites.

"They’re top of the league for a reason."

"From the outside, we were never expected to take points" Davies continued.

"We stayed in contention for the duration.

"We had our chances in the first half, and we also created chances in the second half."

While the Red Devils sit pretty at the top of the pile after eight games, Davies says the stark contrast in league positions didn't play into the group's mindset ahead of the game.

“The belief in the group coming into the fixture was to get something out of the game.

"We were unfortunate that we didn’t put the chances away.

"We’ve proven to everyone that we can compete and that we deserve to be here."
