At a Glance
Aston Villa begin their EFL Cup campaign against League One side Burton Albion on Tuesday night.
Having finished as runners-up in this competition last season, the Villans will be looking to kick off another cup run at the Pirelli Stadium.
This will be the first opportunity to see Dean Smith’s team in action this season after they were without a game on the opening weekend of the Premier League.
Opponents Burton started their league campaign on Saturday, losing 2-1 against Fleetwood Town.
Managed by Jake Buxton, Albion beat Accrington Stanley 5-3 on penalties to reach the second round.
Head-to-Head
Aston Villa and Burton Albion have met on only five previous occasions. Villa have won three, drawn one and lost one of their meetings with the Brewers.
That defeat came in the League Cup back in August 2018 when a Liam Boyce goal won the tie and sent Burton on a run to the semi-finals, where they were defeated 10-0 on aggregate by Manchester City.
Team News
Dean Smith has new signings Matty Cash and Ollie Watkins available for selection after they featured against Manchester United in the team’s final pre-season friendly on Saturday.
Tom Heaton and Wesley are the only members of the first-team squad unavailable for the fixture.
For Burton, Charles Vernam and Reece Hutchinson missed Saturday’s league opener and appear doubtful for Tuesday night.
The Boss
“We have had some pre-season games that have got us ready for this; Bristol City, Wycombe, Arsenal and Manchester United.
“It’s an important game, because it’s our first, and we want to make a really positive start.
“Jake Buxton has gone in there and he’ll have ambitions of a cup upset, so hopefully we put in a really professional performance.”
