Gareth Barry announced his retirement from football on Thursday.

 

The midfielder made 833 appearances during his 22-year career, holding the record for most Premier League appearances with 653.

 

Barry joined Aston Villa from Brighton in 1997 as a trainee, making his debut for the club in a 3-1 win against Sheffield Wednesday in May 1998.

 

He went on to become a fan favourite at Villa Park, appearing 441 times and scoring 52 goals in more than a decade at the club.
