Gemma Davies believes new signing Diana Silva will thrive at Aston Villa Women.

The Portuguese striker will be playing outside of her homeland for the first time when she represents the club in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League.

And Head Coach Davies says Silva, who has 58 caps for her country, has all the attributes to be a big hit in claret and blue.

She said: “We’ve spoken about the importance of the player’s character and with Diana she’s coming from a winning environment.

“She has a thirst for learning and she wants to continue to develop. That’s so important to us that we get the balance between players’ experience and pedigree in the game, but also the youthfulness. Diana brings all of that.”

Alongside Sporting Director Eniola Aluko, Davies has been busy recruiting players for their debut season in the top-flight.

Silva joins Chloe Arthur and Anita Asante in signing for the club, and there are more players on the way as Villa continue to strengthen.

Davies said: “We’ve said it before that we don’t just want to make the numbers up – we want to compete.

“Going into our first year, our goal isn’t just to survive and stay in the league, it’s to go out and be competitive.

“We want to emulate the likes of Manchester United and Tottenham who did well in their debut seasons and then build from there.”

The Super League season is aiming for a start date of 5-6 September. If you’d like to get updates on Women’s fixtures, tickets and news, fill out the form below.
