Douglas Luiz is eager to secure Aston Villa's first win of the Premier League restart when they head to St James’ Park to face Newcastle United on Wednesday.

Dean Smith’s side drew 0-0 with Sheffield United in their first game back before falling to a narrow 2-1 defeat against Chelsea at the weekend.

The Brazilian international expressed his irritation at the way the second half played out against Frank Lampard’s Blues, after Kortney Hause’s goal had given Villa the lead on the stroke of half-time.

Speaking to VillaTV, he said: “It’s been a tough week, the difficulties came from two of our errors.

“They scored two goals in quick succession and that is where the frustration stems from.”

Despite the result at Villa Park, Luiz believes Villa are heading in the right direction and that there have been positives to take from both performances so far.

“We have shown on many occasions that we can match the top teams in the Premier League with our quality,” he explained.

“We have demonstrated a different side to our game in the last matches and we are working hard on what the manager has told us to do.

“We have to look forward to Newcastle, take three points and get the most out of the game that we possibly can."

With all remaining Premier League games taking place behind closed doors, Luiz also gave his thoughts on the unusual atmospheres that players are experiencing.

“It’s very different and we miss having the fans here because it pushes us on when the fans are inside the stadium," he added.

“The important thing is that we are doing this for the health and safety of each individual.”
