Douglas Luiz can’t wait to get going again after the Premier League announced it will resume on 17 June.

When Villa take on Sheffield United it will be exactly 100 days since the league was halted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Brazilian midfielder feels the time is right to get up and running again as he looks to help the club climb out of the relegation zone.

He said: “I think that it was very important for all the players (returning to training) – it was time to go back.

“We stopped for two months. It’s important to get going again. It’s important for us players to go back to training and to our routine.”

Villa’s players returned to training last week with special measures in place to ensure the squad and coaching staff adhered to social distancing.

Contact training has since been approved, but Luiz feels the chance to work on individual aspects of the game will benefit his teammates.

“Each player is training a bit more specifically,” he said.

“The forwards are working on their finishing, the midfielders are focussing on positional marking and the defenders on man marking and important clearances, so I think that it’s all about specifics for each player and their respective positions.

“Each player has been given specific training as the group is smaller. The attention is specifically tailored to five players instead of 20 which has been good. It’s the starting point for things to go back to normal.”
