Gaffer's verdict: Lambert takes positives from Chesterfield loss

Paul Lambert said the performance of Charles N'Zogbia and the valuable experience gained by several youngsters were big positives to take from the defeat to Chesterfield.

Villa's winning pre-season run ended in their latest outing, as they lost 3-1 at the Proact Stadium.

Lambert fielded a youthful side which featured seven academy players - including Jack Grealish who scored early in the second half.

Grealish's well-worked goal was set up by fellow second-half substitute N'Zogbia, who produced another impressive display.

"The good thing was a lot of young kids played," said Lambert.

"A lot of the lads we didn't bring up as they have jet lag still in their system.

"The ones that were here I felt needed a little bit more game time.

"Charles, for instance, I thought did well when he came on - that's another 45 minutes under his belt.

"The only reason Charles played is because he missed a lot of football from the previous year.

"There were a lot of young kids out there who experienced what it is like.

"So from that point of view, I'm happy. As I said before, the results are immaterial. It's about seeing what is going to go forward. There were good things out of it.

"I think Jack has been looking really good for us. He's a young lad and he is showing he can handle it, playing in this environment."

Lambert was also pleased to welcome Brad Guzan back into the fold.

The American goalkeeper, who joined the squad for the second half of their Texas tour, got his first match action of pre-season following a post-World Cup break.

"It is Guzan's first game and there were a couple of mistakes in there but that is just rustiness from not playing," said the manager.

"He's not done much. He is short of where he wants to be as he has just joined us in Houston."

Lambert also confirmed skipper Ron Vlaar will link up with the squad in his native Holland at the weekend when Villa face Groningen.

"Ron will join us," he added. "He had a great World Cup so it will be good to see how he is."
