Tim Sherwood's men have been out in Portugal, enjoying warm-weather training - morning and afternoon.
Two games were planned as the management bid to get the conditioning and fitness of the players at peak levels.
They went down 3-1 to Fulham on Saturday but drew 0-0 in this encounter with Braga on Friday.
What was noticeable was the improvement in zip and vigor from the lads from B6 - as the work done in the week clearly paid dividends.
Villa were very sharp, especially in the first half.
Gabby Agbonlahor looked determined and focused - and the long-serving striker had two great chances to score.
First, he shot over following a brilliant throughball from Carles Gil and then he slammed a fine strike against the crossbar from 25 yards.
The game as a whole was a little bit more subdued after the break, due no doubt to the sun beating down.
But Villa could again have scored, Charles N'Zogbia unlucky with a 25-yard free-kick which clattered against the post.
Mark Bunn was in fine form at the death as he tipped over a stunning long-range effort from Braga.
Overall Villa will have taken great heart from the performance ahead of the domestic programme of friendlies.
