Head coach Joe Hunt was pleased with the spirit of his side after their victory over Durham Women on Sunday.

Villa Ladies recorded their third win in as many matches but were made to work hard by their north-east opponents.

Maddy Cusack's goal just after the interval separated the sides and Hunt declared himself satisfied with the three points.

He said: "On reflection we did well. The girls worked extremely hard and put in a very spirited display.

"We had a bit of luck at the end when they had a 30-yard shot that hit the bar but sometimes you need things to go your way to get the three points.

"Caitlin Leach also made two nice saves midway through the second half but apart from that, we had enough chances and opportunities to win the game long before.

"At half-time the ladies were frustrated because they worked hard but our final ball or decision making was poor. We still created numerous chances and to be fair should've been out of sight.

"The message at half-time was 'keep going'. We tweaked a few little things but the girls responded really well.

"They came flying out the blocks and scored a lovely goal.

"I spoke to Maddy before the game on her lack of goals this season, it's something she was conscious of and has worked very hard to improve.

"It was nice to see her driving through the middle to get into that position to score. Credit to Wilko (Katie Wilkinson) she played a beautiful pass into Maddy to split Durham open.

"We then had a period of the game where we were flying again. There was some lovely interplay between the team and again we came close to doubling the lead.

"I think our missed chances gave Durham some encouragement and they then started to cause us problems at the back. But Maisie (Baker) and Jade (Richards) at the heart of the defence supported by Hayley (Crackle) and Chloe (Jones) at full-back stood firm and dealt with the threats.

"Caitlin's concentration was good as she didn't have a lot to do in the game but when called upon showed why she is an England U20 international."

In a quirky rearrangement of the fixture list, Villa Ladies now travel to Durham for the reverse fixture on Sunday and Hunt is confident his team can produce the same outcome at New Ferens Park.

He added: "We now have to prepare for the same team but away from home.

"We're in a good place at the moment, the girls are full of confidence and don't want the season to end.

"We picked up a couple of injuries against Durham so we'll see how they are in the week.

"I've got to give the team credit - the Reading game last weekend took a lot out of them.

"We tried to reach those levels again but Durham made it hard for us but a win's a win and we'll go looking for another one next weekend."
