Aston Villa fell to defeat in the opening game of their 2026/27 UEFA Youth League campaign, losing out in an eight-goal thriller against Club Brugge at The Nest.
Beaten finalists last season, the Belgian outfit took a commanding two-goal lead into half-time, before adding their third, fourth and fifth goals after the break either side of Jack McGrath’s response.
Late responses from McGrath and substitute Markie Meade completed the scoring in Bruges, but could not save the Young Lions from leaving with nothing, as they went down 5-3.
Jimmy Shan named a young side to take on last year’s runners up in Bruges, with a front three consisting of first-year scholars Oscar Johnson and Daniel Adediran, and second-year McGrath in behind.
And the Villans immediately felt the pace of the encounter in the early stages, as the Belgian outfit – beaten by Real Madrid in the 2025/26 final of this competition, started with a lot of the ball.
Despite this, the Young Lions grew into the early exchanges, fashioning the first chance of the affair 15 minutes in. McGrath was found well by Adediran and cut inside his defender, firing towards the near post but seeing his effort denied by goalkeeper Thibeau Kestemont.
And five minutes later, the hosts made Villa pay for their missed opportunity, as they forced the opening goal. Captain Utku Kurtal drilled a ball across goal from a wide position, ricocheting harshly off visiting skipper Woody Burgess and into the bottom corner to put the home side ahead.
The Villans looked for an immediate response, with McGrath slipping a ball through the middle for Johnson, who called Kestemont into action with a strong hand to keep his side in front.
But Club Brugge were growing stronger and stronger. Tian Koren brought an impressive acrobatic save out of Owen Asemota from distance, before firing over moments later from the resulting corner.
Ten minutes later, the Villa stopper was required again to keep he and his teammates within a goal of the home outfit, getting down well to keep out Axl Wins’ free-kick.
But, just as Shan’s team looked to be getting to the break with just a one-goal deficit, an error from their goalkeeper handed Koren the opportunity to double the advantage – an invitation he duly accepted, finishing routinely past Asemota having intercepted a loose pass out from the back.
With Villa two goals down heading into the second period, they could have used an early goal if they were to stand any chance of staging a comeback.
Instead, within eight minutes of the restart, it was the hosts who had added a third to effectively take the game beyond the reach of their visitors. Kurtal squared for an unmarked Koren at the back post, who had the simple task of stroking into the empty net from a few yards out.
Still, all hope was not lost for Shan and his players. Just minutes later, they had a chance to get themselves on the board as Adediran raced clear in behind, but Kestemont was hastily off his line to thwart the Villa attacker and keep his clean sheet intact.
The Villans didn’t give in, and Shan introduced Josh Blake and Meade from the bench as he tried to turn the tide with attacking changes, the latter forcing Kestemont into a decent stop with a half-volley from a tight angle midway through the second period.
But Club Brugge’s threat on the counter remained very much alive, and moments after Meade had gone close, Clay Atkins had to be alert at the other end to produce an important block, diverting Jippe Caes’ goalbound effort behind.
With the action not showing any signs of stopping, the Villans immediately launched another attack of their own having dealt with the corner. Blake was released and managed to take the ball around Kestemont and wide, but could not beat the retreating defenders who covered the goal.
Seconds later, however, and they had finally breached the home backline to bring themselves back to within two goals, the ball breaking for McGrath inside the area who steered home to notch his side’s first goal of the Youth League campaign.
The Villans now had the wind in their sails, and 12 minutes from time, Meade might have got their second, when racing clear and looking for all the world as though he would score, but covering defender Wout Verlinden did just enough to put the forward off, and he turned his effort over.
Instead, at the other end, Brugge broke again, the ball being fed through for substitute Mohamed Knouzi, who kept his cool to slide a strike past Asemota, before six minutes from time, Koren raced in behind and squeezed a shot through the Villa stopper to complete his hat-trick.
Villa did have the final say, Meade finally getting in on the act two minutes later when cutting inside and finding the far corner, before McGrath added his second of the game in stoppage time when burying the rebound to his penalty which had initially been saved, but an unlikely comeback from the visitors proved a step too far, as they fell to defeat in their Youth League opener.
