Aston Villa fell to a first defeat of the UEFA Champions League league phase on Tuesday evening, as Barcelona ran out 3-0 winners at Camp Nou.

Lamine Yamal’s early strike was added to by a brace from Raphinha as Villa were beaten for the first time in six European outings.

In a week where thousands of Villans travelled to Barcelona to see their side compete in one of the most famous venues in world football, it proved not the result Unai Emery’s side were looking for against the reigning La Liga champions.

Though, as those inside Camp Nou serenaded their side with a chorus of ‘Holte Enders in the Sky’ at the full-time whistle, it proved a trip for them to remember nonetheless.

Here are five talking points from the encounter…

43 years in the making

January 1983 was the last time Aston Villa visited Camp Nou, in the first leg of the two sides’ European Super Cup encounter.

This meeting, therefore, marked the first time in 43 years the Villans had clashed with the 29-time Spanish champions.

And that, in itself, was representative of the journey Unai Emery has taken his side on, to be competing back amongst Europe’s elite on the grandest of stages.

Battling with the best

It was never going to be straightforward against a side which has so far this season only failed to beat Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain. And, when Lamine Yamal gave Barcelona the lead inside seven minutes at Camp Nou, it threatened to be a long night for the Villans.

But Unai Emery’s men once again proved – particularly at points throughout the remainder of the first half when creating their fair share of openings – that they can stand toe-to-toe with some of Europe’s very best outfits.

It ultimately proved not to be the result we were looking for, but Emery’s charges will doubtless learn a lot from a battle with the reigning La Liga champions.

European winning run halted

Defeat for the Villans was our first in Europe in six outings, a run dating back over six months to the first leg of last season’s Europa League semi-final.

Five successive wins in that period – against Forest in the second leg, Freiburg in the final and in our first three outings of this season’s league phase – have made for an impressive record, halted only by one of the favourites to lift the trophy.

Villa will take confidence from the fact that, on the back of our previous European defeat prior to the Forest first leg – a 2-1 reverse away at Go Ahead Eagles a little over a year ago – we would go on to win our next nine in Europe.

The travelling Villans

Neither the result nor the inclement weather conditions in Barcelona could dampen the spirits of those who embarked on yet another European adventure.

The travelling Villans once again soaked up every moment of a Champions League trip to remember, visiting one of the most iconic cities in Europe and one of football’s true cathedrals.

From partying in the Plaça Reial on Monday evening to watching your team play at Camp Nou the following night, you made yourselves heard, and we hope you enjoyed your trip.

Halfway through

And so, at the midway stage of the league phase, Villa still hold an impressive position in the table, having triumphed in three of our four games.

Our 100 per cent start to the European campaign might be over, but wins over Club Brugge, Fenerbahçe and Viking mean we have taken nine points from a possible 12, heading into the second half of the phase.

Up next, a trip back to Türkiye to take on Galatasaray at the end of November, where Unai Emery and his players will be hoping to channel positive memories from Istanbul in May to return to winning ways in the Champions League.
