Steve Bruce says Glenn Whelan has been “worth every penny” after praising his contribution in the win over Ipswich.
Bruce insists that Whelan is winning over the doubters as he picked the midfielder as his man of the match in the 2-0 weekend victory.
The manager says Whelan is a hugely vital cog in the claret and blue machine which is clicking through the gears at present.
He never gives it away, he breaks things up, he’s determined and resilient and he’s a very good midfielder player.
Bruce on Whelan
He said: “I thought Glenn was terrific this weekend.
“I know he’s had a few doubters but look at the way he goes about it, the way he plays, his attitude, he’s as tough as they come and a great professional.
“You can’t have enough of people like that around the place.
“Maybe this time last year we didn’t have enough of people like him. But certainly he’s been worth every penny we’ve spent.
“He never gives it away, he breaks things up, he’s determined and resilient, he covers a lot of ground and he’s a very good midfielder player.
"We could do with him at 26 rather than 33 but still he’s played three games in a week and he was the best player this weekend.
“That’s testament to him and how he looks after himself.”
