Villa’s first player/manager

Villa’s first player/manager

On this day in 1935, Alex Massie made his Villa debut, although it wasn’t an occasion to savour – a 5-0 defeat at Manchester City.

The Scot, who had arrived from Hearts, played 152 competitive games for Villa, and although the team were relegated in his first season at Villa Park, he helped the club to promotion in 1937/38.

He also played in the opening four matches of the 1945/46 campaign before hanging up his boots to take on the role of manager in succession to Jimmy Hogan, whose time in charge had been curtailed by outbreak of the Second World War.

Massie remained in charge for almost four years.
