Tiresome in Tokyo

Tiresome in Tokyo

On this day in 1982, Villa played in Tokyo, taking on Penarol of Uruguay in the World Clubs Championship.

The pitch at Japan’s Olympic Stadium was bumpy and barren, with barely a blade of grass, which ruined the prestigious contest between the champions of Europe and South America.

Gordon Cowans struck the bar with a swerving shot early on, but Penarol emerged 2-0 winners with goals from Jair (27 minutes) and Silva (68).
