Birth of the Cup skipper

Birth of the Cup skipper

On this day in 1923, Johnny Dixon was born in Heppurn-on-Tyne.

Dixon joined Villa during the Second World War after writing to the club for a trial because he liked the name Aston Villa, and two years later he scored on his debut, a Football League South game against Derby County.

By the time he retired in 1961, he had made 430 appearances and scored 144 goals, five of them during Villa’s run to the 1957 FA Cup final.

He remains the last Villa captain to have been presented with the Cup after leading the side to victory over Manchester United at Wembley.
