How’s Platt for a profit?

How’s Platt for a profit?

On this day in 1991, David Platt left Villa to join Italian club Bari for £5.5m – a record fee for a British player.

The transfer represented a huge profit for Villa.

The England international had joined Villa from Crewe Alexandra in 1988 for just £200,000 – and even that fee was regarded by manager Graham Taylor as “over the top”.

Taylor revealed that he had increased his original offer of £150,000 only because of a counter offer from Watford boss Steve Harrison, who had previously been Taylor’s assistant at Villa Park.
