West Germany 2 Spain 1

West Germany 2 Spain 1

On this day in 1966, West Germany were 2-1 winners against Spain in the third World Cup game to be staged at Villa Park.

The Germans went on to reach the final, losing 4-2 to England after extra time but Spain were homeward bound after failing to qualify for the quarter-finals.

Spanish coach, Jose Villalonga, quit in tears after his team’s exit.
