Chatt quick off the mark

Chatt quick off the mark

On this day in 1895, Bob Chatt’s first-minute goal gave Villa a 1-0 victory over West Bromwich Albion in the third FA Cup final between the clubs in the space of eight years. Villa had won 2-0 in 1887, with the Baggies recording a 3-0 success in the 1892 final.

Chatt’s goal, which many spectators missed because they were still taking up their positions, was recorded at 30 seconds. It remained the fastest goal in a Cup Final until 2009, when Louis Saha put Everton ahead against Chelsea on 25 seconds.
