Potting the reds

Potting the reds

On this day in 1979, Villa recorded an excellent 3-1 home win over a Liverpool side who would go on to become First Division champions, courtesy of Allan Evans, John Deehan and a Phil Thompson own goal.

The result was all the more commendable because it was one of only four defeats suffered all season by the Anfield outfit – and the only time the parsimonious Reds conceded more than one goal in a game. The champions’ parsimonious defence was breached a total of just 16 times in 42 league games.
