First sub to score

First sub to score

On this day in 1967, Lew Chatterley became the first Villa player to score a goal after going on as a substitute when he was on target in a 3-2 home victory over Blackpool.

Substitutes had been introduced by the Football League at the start of the 1965/66 season, although it was the 10th game of that campaign before Villa used a replacement, Graham Parker replacing the injured Tony Hateley in a 3-2 victory over Tottenham.

Sixteen months later, Chatterley became our first sub to score when he netted against the Seasiders after replacing Mike Tindall.

Barry Stobart hit Villa’s other two goals.
