The Aston Villa Foundation and the family of Benjamin Zephaniah have recognised eight inspiring individuals through the second annual Benjamin Zephaniah Localism Awards.

The awards celebrate the life and legacy of the legendary writer, poet and former Foundation ambassador, shining a light on people whose dedication, compassion and leadership embody the spirit of ‘localism’ - making a lasting difference within their communities.

Suze Carter was recognised for her work through OurScene CIC, where she delivers extensive community activity in Brandwood, one of the most deprived areas in England. Suze runs Brandwood Buzz, a local community hub website promoting events, activities and organisations in the area. She also plays a vital role in organising a community garden opening at Dawberry Corner, coordinating park events and litter picks.

Hafizah Bint Rashid has made a powerful impact as Chair of the Youth Forum at Legacy WM. In this role, she represents the voices of young people, creating opportunities for them to share their views, build confidence and engage in positive activities. Alongside her leadership work, Hafizah volunteers at Legacy WM’s badminton club and youth sessions, supporting young people to access sport in a safe, inclusive and welcoming environment.

Adil Parkar, Secretary of Masjid Al Falaah in Aston, was honoured for his commitment to community cohesion. Adil has helped shift how local mosques operate, encouraging them to become inclusive community hubs that serve everyone, regardless of background or faith. Widely regarded as a trusted problem-solver, he builds strong partnerships across communities, fostering dialogue, cooperation and mutual understanding that strengthens Aston’s social fabric.

Farooq Hussain was recognised for his voluntary role as Lead Secretary for Youth Football at Real Aston. His dedication to grassroots football provides young people with opportunities to thrive both on and off the pitch, offering a positive platform for development, confidence and community connection.

Diane Powell, a long-standing teaching assistant in Handsworth, has supported generations of families through her unwavering dedication to education. Diane is renowned for her reliability, warmth and wholehearted involvement in school and community life, making her an irreplaceable local figure.

Chris Smith has dedicated nearly 50 years of voluntary service to youth sport in Handsworth. Through his work with the Birmingham Primary Schools FA and the Birmingham Schools Athletics Association, Chris has created inclusive sporting opportunities for thousands of children, dedicating countless hours to coaching, organising fixtures and ensuring safe, structured access to sport.

Theresa Senior joined Witton Lodge Community Association as a volunteer in 2017 and has consistently gone above and beyond to support local people. From running coffee mornings to contributing at Witton Lakes Eco Hub, Theresa’s enthusiasm and kindness have helped bring neighbours together and strengthen the Perry Common community.

Shakeel Hussain was recognised for his 15 years of dedication to Birmingham Youth Sports Academy. Through his leadership, countless young people have accessed structured football programmes that promote teamwork, discipline and confidence, leaving a lasting impact on families and the wider community.

Award winners were invited to a matchday hospitality experience, when Aston Villa took on Sunderland over the weekend, also receiving a trophy for their hard work and dedication.
