Rémi Garde has not given up on surviving this season but admits that the "race is very difficult" as he targets winning a mini league at the bottom of the Barclays Premier League table.
There are four teams at the foot of the league fighting for one spot above the drop line.
Garde thinks Villa can still do it, despite being nine points away.
But he accepts it will be a tough challenge.
He said: "I have not got the habit of waiting for good news from my direct rivals but, once again, after this weekend we're still in the race.
"The race is very difficult because we start at the bottom of this small league that we are playing with three or four other teams.
"We still have the possibility to do it and we have to focus on the next game.
"We still have to believe. Sometimes the results of other teams haven't been in our favour. This weekend they have. Maybe it's a sign.
"We have to digest very quickly this heavy defeat. It's not always easy.
"But we have to look forward at the next game, which will be difficult too.
"It's a home game, though, so hopefully we show good signs.
"Tottenham is a very good side this season. It will be a crucial game for us.
"We will all have to be very committed and dedicated in that match."
