The Boss: Garde on loss, formation change, set-pieces and positives

Rémi Garde spoke to the press following the 3-1 defeat to Everton.

His views are below.

On conceding so early…

We couldn't have made a worst start.

Conceding the second goal close to the first one also wasn't the best situation we wanted, of course.

At the moment we are struggling to score goals.

Of course, to be behind the score by two goals was a difficult task.

Conceding too many goals is a problem currently.

On the change in formation…

I remember well the first game at Everton and I know how well this team can stretch you with the width of the pitch and also the players inside.

I thought this shape would fit better to give them problems.

Then unfortunately we conceded a goal from a set piece very early. Then the plan is difficult to hold. We had to change a little bit.

Despite this fact of the first early goal, I think we created some good opportunities, especially on the side, which we wanted.

Playing three at the back can be a different system - an offensive one - and we have shown that especially with Aly Cissokho on the left.

Unfortunately it was not enough tonight.

On conceding from a set-piece…

In football 30% of goals scored are from set pieces.

This is part of the game and I don't want to blame. But of course we have to do better.

We conceded an early goal here against Man City on set pieces in the cup, the second one against Liverpool was on set pieces also and the first one here.

Sometimes set pieces the way you defend, the commitment you put on set pieces is very important.

It is not a question of tactics, it is the desire to clear the ball and we couldn't on this occasion.

On boosting the confidence at present…

It is difficult to find the right words, especially when you lose two or three games in a row.

But you have to always find the resources deeply inside yourselves.

Everyone has to do that.

On positives…

The second half we did was quite encouraging.

I saw a good spell - and we must not forget that Everton is a very good side.

They have played all together for a long time now.

We had some good spells, we reduced the score and created some good chances.

On still believing for survival fight...

We know the situation is difficult but we have to fight until the end.

We have to play with desire, passion and dedication to win games - this is football.

Sometimes it's difficult - it's very difficult - but I try to make sure that everyone around me still believes it's possible.
