Villa Ladies: Katy Moran unveiled as new captain

Katy Moran is the new captain of Villa Ladies.

The 25-year-old has taken on the role in the club's pre-season fixtures to date and has been officially unveiled by head coach Joe Hunt.

The disciplined all-round midfielder can screen the back four in the holding role and can also play higher up the field to join in attacks.

She replaces the outgoing Sherry McCue who has moved to Sheffield Ladies.

And Moran spoke of her pride after accepting her new role.

She told AVTV HD: "It's a privilege.

"I've been at the club for quite a while now and you never expect to be captain so when I was asked I couldn't really say no.

"I'm one of the oldest in the team at 25. You've got 16-year-olds in there.

"You've just got to nurture them and get them doing the right things and remain professional at all times so they can look up to you."

Meanwhile, Hunt believes the midfielder is the best person to lead his troops in what will be a 'big season' for the squad, which kicks off at Everton on March 24.

He said: "I have spoken to Katy regarding the captaincy.

"I outlined what I thought and why in my opinion she was the best person for the job this season. Thankfully she accepted straight away and I'm delighted!

"She's been doing the job for a few weeks now and has been magnificent.

"There's a lot of responsibility on her shoulders but it hasn't made any difference to her.

"In fact, I think she is training harder and credit to her playing very well in our pre-season games.

"The whole squad respect Katy. She's only 25 but seems to have been around forever.

"I think her experience of playing senior football since she was 16/17 will help our young squad.

"She's outstanding around the group, very positive but very determined.

"She will only accept the best and we all know by the way she plays you have to be competitive and work for the team to keep her happy.

"It's a big year for the squad but I feel we've made the right appointment to lead the team on matchdays and be that buffer between staff and players."
