It was a disappointing night at the Boleyn Ground for 10-man Villa, who suffered defeat after second-half goals from Michail Antonio and Cheikhou Kouyate.

Rémi Garde's men started brightly but there's no doubt the momentum shifted in the home side's favour following Jordan Ayew's dismissal after 17 minutes for an off-the-ball foul on Aaron Cresswell.

Antonio made the breakthrough on 58 minutes, beating Mark Bunn with a header into the corner after meeting Mark Noble's long diagonal ball.

The opener had been coming, with the home side bombarding Villa in a frantic 10-minute spell at the start of the second half.

Micah Richards hooked James Collins' header off the line, Dimitri Payet's free-kick clipped the post and Bunn acrobatically kept out Noble's volley.

Kouyate wrapped things up late on, firing high into the net as the hosts sprung a counter-attack from Jordan Veretout's corner.
