Academy news: U17 side take part in Wiesbaden tournament

An U17 squad led by Tony McAndrew and Tommy Mooney took part in an international indoor tournament in Wiesbaden, Germany over the weekend.

The format was five-a-side - an alternative to what the players are used to.

The squad included U15 Anton Hooper and U14 DJ Sturridge - demonstrating our vision to develop our best young talent.

Top European opposition with the likes of Rapid Vienna, Bayer Leverkusen, Schalke, Young Boys and Red Bull Salzburg gave our young players a fantastic challenge.

Losing only one group game out of five, the claret and blues were very unfortunate not to progress to the semi-finals but overall it was an excellent weekend of football for the players.

Tony McAndrew said: "It was a great experience for the players.

"We improved in every game which was important and it showed that the players are learning."

Villa U17 squad: Boucher, Bazeley Graham, Clark, Clarke, Knibbs, Hall, Mooney, Hooper, Sturridge, Rowe.

Don't forget, our young guns are in FA Youth Cup action on Monday February 1 where they take on Blackburn Rovers at Villa Park - kick-off 7pm.
