Defences were on top at the Hawthorns, although Villa undoubtedly possessed a greater attacking threat.

Jordan Ayew did well to win possession deep in the Albion half and his low drive was parried by Ben Foster.

Moments later, Craig Dawson acrobatically headed over his own bar to clear Carles Gil's dangerous ball into the six-yard box.

Rémi Garde's men also had a strong penalty claim waved away by referee Robert Madley midway through the first period when Jonas Olsson appeared to catch Jordan Ayew inside the box.

The hosts started the second half well with Craig Dawson heading over from Craig Gardner's free-kick and Stephane Sessegnon curling an effort wide of the post.

But Ben Foster made two saves to deny Ashley Westwood as Villa pushed hard for a winner.

Substitute Rudy Gestede was only on the pitch for 16 minutes before he pulled up with a hamstring injury but the Benin forward still had two opportunities, heading wide on both occasions.
