Scorer Lescott: We can take pride from Palace win

Joleon Lescott is hoping Tuesday evening's 'massive' win over Crystal Palace can be the catalyst for an upturn in fortunes.

The claret and blues earned three vital points against the Eagles, courtesy of Lescott's headed goal in the 58th minute.

It was manager Rémi Garde's first win at the B6 helm and the first at Villa Park in the 2015/16 campaign.

And Lescott, deputising as captain in the absence of Micah Richards, was delighted with his team's ability to grind out the victory.

He said: "It's massive.

"It's a difficult time for us and we just needed to grind out a win.

"We played well at times but it's not about performances, it's about points and we're grateful to get the three.

"It was very important and we knew how important it was, especially after performances and results recently.

"Crystal Palace are a great away team but we nullified them, apart from a few chances in the first half.

"We've been unfortunate in some games this season so hopefully this New Year will bring a turn of fortune."

On a personal level, the 33-year old defender was delighted to keep a clean sheet - Villa's first since the 0-0 draw with Man City back in November but says the squad will keep working hard to ensure the Eagles display was not a one-off.

He added: "As a defender you always pride yourself on clean sheets and we earned that.

"We had to defend a lot of crosses and a lot of direct play but credit to the whole team.

"We're not going to get carried away but we can take pride from that."
