Villa claimed a first Barclays Premier League victory since the opening day of the season thanks to Joleon Lescott's 58th minute strike.

The stand-in skipper's header found its way through the legs of Palace keeper Wayne Hennessey to give the claret and blues a long-awaited win.

The home side survived an early scare when Wilfried Zaha's shot clipped the post in the first minute.

But Rémi Garde's men showed plenty of attacking endeavour of their own, with Jordan Veretout firing straight at Hennessey and Jordan Ayew half-volleying into the side-netting.

And Villa took their strong momentum into the second half.

Hennessey made a flying save after a good turn and shot from Libor Kozak.

There was relief around Villa Park when Lescott headed Villa in front just before the hour mark.

Ayew brilliantly weaved past two defenders only to blaze an effort wide of the target.

But one goal proved to be enough as Garde recorded his first win as Villa boss.
