Business leaders sign up for Villa Park sleepout fundraiser

Last month, we brought news of this year's Villa Park sleepout.

Some of Birmingham's business and civic leaders are set to sleep outdoors at Villa Park - and there's plenty of time for more people to get involved.

The sponsored sleepout will take place on Thursday April 14, and will raise funds to help tackle homelessness in the city.

The event is led by Aston Villa Foundation, working with Church Urban Fund, Thrive Together Birmingham, and leading local businesses.

Spencer Wright, Chief Executive of Dains Accountants, was the first to sign up.

He said: "I took part in a similar event at Villa Park last year and am glad to do what I can to raise funds to support those less fortunate than many of us.

"The business sleepout is a fantastic way for local companies to show that they care about their community.

"Although it's a serious issue, there's a sense of healthy competition, and real camaraderie among participants on the night.

"I urge Birmingham's business leaders to sign up to take part in the sleepout on March 17, 2016."

Spencer visited Birmingham Churches Night Shelter, one of the charitable projects which will benefit from the business sleepout.

The night shelter opened this week - and will run till Easter.

It provides food and emergency accommodation to 12 homeless people every night.

Last year, seven churches provided accommodation over 56 nights - this year, the project has expanded to include 14 churches providing accommodation across 84 nights.

Over the past two years, Aston Villa staff have volunteered at the winter night shelter in Aston.

Ravinder Masih, Head of Aston Villa Foundation, said: "I've volunteered at the winter night shelters and witnessed first-hand the incredible impact they have in providing solace to those less fortunate during the colder months.

"I am looking forward to seeing many business and civic leaders across the city joining us to make a difference.

"You'll have a fantastic night with other like-minded people, and what better sight than to wake up and see the glorious pitch at Villa Park."

To take part in the business sleepout, send your name, job title, and e-mail address to James Hinton at the Aston Villa Foundation:
