Rémi Garde accepts there is a fragility in the claret and blue camp because of the team's precarious position in the top-flight table - but he stressed that the solution is in the dressing room.
Garde says confidence is low, with Villa lying at the foot of the league and 11 points from safety.
But he called on the players to look within, cast off the shackles and turn the situation around.
Garde pinpointed his own role - creating the right environment for success to flourish, creating a clear football plan on the pitch and harnessing a collective spirit in the group.
But he was clear that a winning mentality was a personal pre-requisite- and he's confident he has that trait in his group.
He said: "When you lose so many games at the start of the season, the impact of this is probably huge.
"This is why I am always talking about the fragility and lack of confidence within the team.
"Saying that the solution is within the team and within the dressing room - it's nowhere else.
"Okay you have to analyse what happened individually but then say 'I have pride, I am healthy, I am fit, I want to win games' and then 'I have to behave like that'.
"If not you say 'I have this problem', 'The team has this problem' and you never go forward.
"I feel champions are very strong in the mind. I have to be aswell.
"I have to build the atmosphere that will allow the players to flourish.
"For me when I was a player, in every successful team I played with, I knew what I had to do on the pitch. For me this is very important. That stuff is my job.
"The role of the manager is also to look at the collective situation. That's a huge part of my job.
"When you are in this situation, all of the individual problems seem to come forward quicker than if you were winning games.
"My job is to put individual problems behind the collective spirit. I have this responsibility.
"But of course individually the players have to show they are capable of giving 100% in every game.
"It's about the winning mentality. If you don't have a winning mentality you are not a football player."
