Thursday media watch [24.07.14 AM]: Reaction to win over Dallas

Birmingham Mail: Andi Weimann and Charles N'Zogbia's sharp-shooting put whoever shot JR to shame as Aston Villa's episode of Dallas had a happy ending here at Toyota Stadium. Clinical finishes from Weimann and N'Zogbia just before and just after the interval ensured Villa kicked off their Texas tour with an encouraging win. It was a good workout for Villa in sweltering conditions against a Major League Soccer club halfway through their season and with greater match fitness.

Birmingham Mail: Joe Cole's Texas tour could be over after Paul Lambert revealed he is reluctant to rush Aston Villa's veteran playmaker back from injury. Cole missed the 2-0 win over FC Dallas at Toyota Stadium with a thigh problem carried over from the friendly victory at Mansfield. Lambert has not completely ruled the 32-year-old former England midfielder out of Saturday's practice match against Houston Dynamos. But Cole has missed training for the past few days and Lambert admits he will not risk aggravating the injury by rushing him back.

Birmingham Mail: Brad Guzan is ready to feel the warmth - from the stifling temperatures in Texas and Villa's American army of supporters. The US international has linked up with Paul Lambert's squad following a brief break in his home nation. Guzan was allowed extra time off after spending most of his summer at the Brazil 2014 World Cup, where he was an unused substitute, as back-up for Tim Howard. The 29-year-old goalkeeper is excited Villa are back in the States after a three-match tour two years ago.

Birmingham Mail: Gary Gardner knows exactly what it means to the claret and blue obsessives who have travelled to Texas to support their team. He's spent much of the past few years sitting with them. Such a regular spectator has the injury-plagued midfielder become that it is a wonder Villa haven't given him his own home and away season tickets to boost sales figures. Gardner intends to use the experience of mingling with the faithful to give him that extra incentive to kick on in the upcoming campaign.

Birmingham Mail: Bouncing Czech Libor Kozak gave Villa fans reasons to be cheerful as he stepped up his recovery in an open training session in Dallas. Kozak, and fellow centre-forward casualty Christian Benteke, have travelled on Villa's tour of Texas as they strive to get back to fitness. The sight of both strikers on the field at FC Dallas' Toyota Park was a boost to the 100 or so fans who attended the session.

The Sun: Paul Lambert will try to cram key contract talks into Aston VIlla's hectic tour of Texas. Star midfielder Fabian Delph used a meet-and-greet to tell the club's American fans he was keen to extend his deal - which has only a year left. As things stand, Delph, skipper Ron Vlaar and forward Gabby Agbonlahor will all be free to discuss terms with other sides in January.

Daily Star: Fabian Delph has told Randy Lerner he won't walk out on Aston Villa. The fans' player of the year has a special relationship with the departing American billionaire owner. The 24-year-old is one of Lerner's favourites and was due to meet him in Dallas last night.

Daily Express: Tottenham are ready to send Michael Dawson and Lewis Holtby to Aston Villa to beat Southampton and Manchester United to Ron Vlaar. Vlaar was hugely impressive at the World Cup for the Netherlands and has attracted attention from a number of English sides.
