Texas Tour 2014: Hendrie running onion rings round the opposition

Lee Hendrie enjoyed a night to relish as he sampled food that ran onion rings around its opposition.

Hendrie followed in the footsteps of Larry Hagman and George W Bush and paid a visit to one of the oldest restaurants in USA as he sampled the food at Sonny Bryan's Smokehouse in Dallas.

The Texas BBQ venue serves up century-old recipes and has incredibly friendly service.

From brisket to homemade sauce to famous onion rings, there's nothing more authentic across the pond than Sonny Bryan's Smokehouse - and it has plenty of grub to tickle your spare ribs.

Hendrie was a special guest at the famous eatery, which first opened in 1958, and handed over a new claret and shirt as well as a pendant to the restaurant manager.

Sonny Bryan's has nine locations in Dallas-Fort Worth.

The original location, where Hendrie visited is, is across from UT Southwestern Medical Center and is a popular lunch spot among workers in the area's medical district.

The background to the opening of Sonny Bryan's was recanted to Hendrie as he chatted to staff.

In 1910 Elias Bryan moved his family to Dallas from Cincinnati and opened the first Bryan's Barbecue.

His son, William Jennings Bryan - known as Red for his hair - opened his own restaurant in Oak Cliff, Texas in 1935.

Working with his dad was William Jennings Bryan Jr., who was known as "Sonny".

Sonny left Red in 1958 and opened his own restaurant on February 13, the same day his dad and granddad opened their restaurants.

Since that time the legend has spread worldwide! Sonny's reputation for friendly service and melt-in-your-mouth barbecue has fed US. Presidents, famous entertainers, sports legends, and other famous patrons.

Sonny Bryan's has been featured in all types of publications including television, books, magazines, newspapers and more.
