World Cup 2014: Philippe Senderos sees Swiss clinch dramatic win

Philippe Senderos saw Switzerland grab a dramatic win in their World Cup opener against Ecuador.

Villa's new signing was on the bench as the Swiss fought back from a goal down to claim victory in the Group E clash.

Switzerland, coached by Paul Lambert's mentor Ottmar Hitzfeld, arrived in Brazil ranked sixth in the world.

However, they struggled to cope with the energy of their South American opponents in the first half, falling behind on 22 minutes when the unmarked Enner Valencia headed home from six yards.

The Swiss hit back early in the second half when Ricardo Rodriguez whipped in a corner to the near post and Freiburg striker Admir Mehmedi rose above Carlos Gruezo to convert.

Hitzfeld's team had to survive several scares in the closing stages, with Valencia squandering a great chance to score a second.

But the Swiss clinched victory on the counter-attack in the final minute of the match.

Rodriguez charged down the left and crossed for Real Sociedad striker Haris Seferovic to score at the near post.

Senderos and his fellow substitutes joined in the jubilant celebrations at Seferovic netted in the dying seconds.

The 29-year-old centre-back will be hoping for a taste of the action when Switzerland face France on Friday June 20 and then Honduras on Wednesday June 25.
